After making Jazz Samba with guitarist Charlie Byrd and his group in 1962, followed by Jazz Samba Encore! with Luiz Bonfá and Big Band Bossa Nova with arranger Gary McFarland, tenor giant Stan Getz partnered with the Brazilian masters João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim for a bewitching set that took Album of the Year and four other Grammy categories in 1965. Getz was an important exponent of his instrument and one of the supremely melodious improvisers in modern jazz, with a style deeply rooted in the swing period. Drawing his light, vibrato-less tone and basic approach from Lester Young, Getz developed a highly personal manner which, for its elegance and easy virtuosity, stood apart from the aggressive bop style of the late 1940s and 1950s.

He played with the bands of Jack Teagarden, Stan Kenton, Jimmy Dorsey, and Benny Getz did and grudgingly agreed to record Jazz Samba in February 1962. But according to vibraphonist Gary Burton , who would join the Stan Getz Quartet in early 1964, Getz was unhappy with the results, despite the album's moderate success. These are Jazz Samba (Verve, 1962), Big Band Bossa Nova (Verve, 1962), Jazz Samba Encore! (Verve, 1963), Getz/Gilberto (Verve, 1964) and Getz/Almeida (Verve, 1966).
